Politically conscious indie pop band Exit Clov is based in Washington, D.C. and features twin sisters Emily Hsu (vocals, keyboard, violin) and Susan Hsu (vocals, guitar, violin). With an impressive national following and full-house touring venues, their EPs include Starfish (2003), Saskwatch (2004), Jolly Roget Sessions (2006), and Respond Respond (2006).
Welly Yang, Actor, Singer, & Producer TAF '86-'89
As an actor, playwright, and singer, Welly has starred in the Broadway shows Miss Saigon and Aladdin. He has also appeared in numerous television shows such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, As the World Turns, National Geographic Explorer and Ghostwriter. He is the founder of Second Generation, an Asian American non-profit theater company, and currently is an Executive Producer of the AZN Asian Excellence Awards, the only nationally televised event celebrating Asian American achievements in entertaiment and the arts.
Karin Wang, Civil Rights Advocate TAF '87-'90
As an Attorney and Vice-President at the Asian Pacific American Legal Center (APALC) in Los Angeles, Karin oversees APALC's legal, public policy and leadership programs. She works on a broad range of civil rights and social justice issues like immigration, language rights, racial discrimination, health care access and marriage equality.
Ben Ling, Community Leader TAF '93-'97
In addition to working as an International Financial Advisor for Merrill Lynch and providing wealth management services to high-net worth individuals, Ben is known for his dedication to LA's Taiwanese American Citizen's League serving as the Political Internship Alumni Relations/ Mentor Director and as the President of Taiwanese American Professionals, an organization that inspires, empowers, and develops leaders in the community.
Charles Yu, Attorney & Author TAF '89-'92
Charles' first book, Third Class Superhero (Harcourt, 2006) received a starred review in Kirkus and an "A" in Entertainment Weekly. His fiction has been published in a number of magazines and literary journals including Esquire, Oxford American Magazine, The Gettysburg Review, Harvard Review, Mid-American Review, among others. He is currently working on his first novel.
Stephen Chen, Attorney & Activist TAF '91-'92
Stephen currently works as a supervisory attorney for the US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights in the San Francisco field office and is responsible for enforcement of laws protecting individuals and communities from discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, gender, disability, and age by educational institutions receiving Federal funds.
Kelvin Yu, Theater & Television Actor TAF '89-'95
Kelvin's studies range from UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television to London University at Goldsmiths in New Cross to Carter-Thor Studios in Los Angeles. His television credits include Popular, The Shield, Without A Trace, Las Vegas, Gilmore Girls, ER, and most recently Studio 60 on The Sunset Strip. Film credits include Grandma's Boy, Elizabethtown, and Milk.
John Lin, Youth Ministry Director TAF '85-'99
John was previously a Youth Director at Fort Bend Community Church in Houston, Texas where he and his wife, Grace, led the youth ministry. He is currently working towards a degree at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, CA, and interning at Evergreen Baptist Church of LA. His biggest accomplishment is surviving the first year of fatherhood. In 2004, John returned to TAF as one of the most inspiring Youth Program Speakers TAF has ever seen.
Cynthia Hong, Marketing Director TAF '89-'95
Cynthia spent several years serving as a TAF Junior Program Director during its inception and formative period in the early 1990's. After obtaining her MBA from Columbia University, she eventually worked her way to Hollywood as a Marketing Director at Warner Home Video. She also is an Associate Producer for an independent film by critically acclaimed filmmaker Chris Chan Lee, entitled Undoing, which is currently touring the film festival circuits.
Ian Ding, Musician TAF '84-'99
Ian graduated with honors from the University of Illinois and received a Master of Music degree from the Juilliard School, studying with Gregory Zuber of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In 2003, Ding was appointed Assistant Principal Percussionist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. As a prior member of both the New World Symphony in Miami and the UBS Verbier Festival Orchestra in Switzerland, he has performed in concert halls throughout North and South America, Europe and Japan. Since 2005, he has been a Lecturer of Music at the University of Michigan.
Albert Chen and Stephanie (Hong) Chen, Proud Parents TAF'86-'94 & '91-'97
After meeting at TAF in 1994, Albert and Stephanie got married in 2002 and are currently settled in San Francisco. Stephanie is an associate at a private investment fund, and Albert is a post-doctoral fellow at UCSF. In 2007, they welcomed little Natalie Lynn-Hong Chen into the world, who represents the future 3rd generation of our community! Natalie even has her own blog! In seven years, they expect to send her to one of the best Taiwanese American summer camps for kids in the country!
